1 st Thai Rainbow Book Day 9 June 2007

On 9 June 2007 over 60 people attended the Thai Queer Resources Centre’s first Rainbow Book Day at the Karnmanee Palace Hotel in Bangkok. Organised in collaboration with Thai academics researching sexuality issues as well as gay and lesbian NGOs, the aim of the day was to highlight the academic and cultural importance of preserving Thai books, magazines, and other source materials on the country’s diverse gay, lesbian and transgender communities.

The day was opened with an academic forum on “The Academic Value of Thailand’s Rainbow Heritage”, and speakers included Assoc. Prof. Peter Jackson ( Australian National University), Dr Sant Suwatcharapinun ( Chiang Mai University), Ac. Kingrak Ingkhawat (Thai Chamber of Commerce University), Ac. Purin Nakhasing ( Kassetsart University), and Khun Sarirarat Sukamolsan ( Thammasat University).

Emeritus Professor Douglas Sanders kindly donated two boxes of Thai gay magazines to the TQRC’s Thai rainbow archive project, and other participants also donated a range of magazines.

Displays of old and new books dealing with same-sex and transgender issues in Thailand were set up by the following NGOs: Anjaree, Saphan, Bangkok Rainbow, Rainbow Sky, Swing and MPlus, as well as Cyberfish Media.

Significant colour was added to the afternoon by the graceful presence of Khun Yolada Khomklorng, Miss Alcazar 2005, member of the Venus Flytrap group, and author of the new book “Kathoey, kathoey”. Male models from “Max Magazine” also made an exciting entrance to conclude the afternoon on a less bookish note.

The Thai Rainbow Book Day was reported on fridae.com website (see: http://www.fridae.com/newsfeatures/article.php?articleid=1953&viewarticle=1) and in the Post Today newspaper (see -- add Post Today here ).
